Tilden Arts Center presents Steven Martin’s “Picasso at the Lapin Agile”

Tickets are now on sale for Steve Martin’s side splitting comedy, “Picasso at the Lapin Agile,” opening in the Tilden Arts Center Studio Theatre on Thursday, August 17, 2017.

Steve Martin pens this comedy, which imagines 1904 Paris and The Lapin Agile (“The Nimble Rabbit”), beloved watering hole to struggling artists and would-be geniuses. Enter Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein, two soon-to-be legends with egos are as big as their intellects, spar with the regulars and each other about art, science, inspiration, love, and the promise of the 20th century. Throw into this mix a mysterious visitor with a penchant for blue suede shoes, and you’re in for a brilliant and witty evening in the theatre.

The production is directed by Christopher Plonka, a graduate of Community College of Rhode Island and Stonehill College. Plonka is the former Artistic Director for the New Place Players, where he directed the musical Bloody, Bloody, Andrew Jackson and has been freelancing in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, working with companies such as Priscilla Beach Theatre, Cotuit Center for the Arts, Bristol Theatre Company, and Boston Public Works in Massachusetts and Counter Productions, Epic Theatre, and Arctic Theatre in Rhode Island.

Plonka directs a seasoned cast with features Eric Joseph, Executive Director of the Bay Colony Shakespeare Company, appearing as Freddy, Santino Torretti as Picasso and Dan Svirsky as Einstein. Torretti recently appeared as Winston Smith in the Tilden Arts Center production of George Orwell’s 1984, and as Nick in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, at Cotuit Center for the Arts. Svirsky is a CCCC alumn and graduate of Bridgewater State University’s theatre program, recently playing FDR in Assassins. The cast is completed by Janet Moore (Germaine), Dan Wehncke (Gaston), Dominic Fucile (Schmendiman), Taryn van Eselstyn (Countess), Len Solomon (Sagot) and Gretchen Pope (Admirer).
