VALOR Act Academic Credit Evaluation Policy

In accordance with the Valor Act, Cape Cod Community College uses the ACE Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experience in the Armed Services as the primary method for evaluating and awarding academic credit for military occupation, training, coursework and experience. Credit for military experience is treated as transfer credit and is listed as military credit on College transcript(s).

Official documentation of military experience must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar. The Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corp and Navy : Active Duty, Reserve and Veterans now use the Joint Service Transcript (JST): https://jst.doded.mil/.

Additional credit may be earned by passing certain examinations or through portfolio review:

  • CLEP (The College Level Examination Program) is part of the College Board and consists of a series of examinations that test an individual's college level knowledge gained through work, independent study, military service and professional development.
  • DANTES (The Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support Program) offers a wide variety of examinations to assist service members in meeting their educational goals. They administer over 38 subject examinations which are evaluated by ACE.
  • CAEL (Council for Adult and Experiential Learning) offers a series of courses intended to teach students how to create portfolios of their relevant past work and military experience.
  • Challenge exam – opportunity to earn college credit for lifetime experiences by demonstrating proficiency in the content of a course.
