Cape Cod Community College
Smoking Policy and Procedures
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts mandated the elimination of smoking within the confines of public buildings which fall under the jurisdiction of the State. The Cape Cod Community College smoke free policy provides for a healthy working and learning environment by eliminating second hand smoke and provides an environment that encourages people to explore health-related behaviors. In addition, the 2006 Surgeon General's report states that there is no safe level of exposure to second hand smoke. In the interest of protecting the health and well being of members and visitors to the College community, smoking is prohibited from our campus. This includes all work areas, offices, restrooms, lobbies, public entrances, walk ways, common areas, grounds, etc. The smoking policy will not be enforced in personal vehicles or in the parking lots beyond the ring road with the exception of parking lot 12 adjacent to the Fitness and Health Center where smoking will not be permitted. This policy becomes effective July 1, 2010.
July 1- September 30, 2010. During this period, students/staff/community members/visitors who are smoking on campus will be handed "Thank you for not smoking" cards by selected staff and students who are assisting with the transition to a smoke-free environment. Individuals will be reminded of the No Smoking Policy within the ring road (including the Fitness and Health Centers).
Successful implementation of this policy requires a College-wide cooperative effort. As of October 1, 2010, any College community member or visitor smoking on campus within the ring road is in violation of the Smoking Policy. While education and smoking cessation programs are the preferred interventions, violators may be subject to fines and disciplinary actions as identified in the appropriate collective bargaining agreements or personnel policies, as well as the Mass. Student Code of Conduct. Visitors to the campus will be directed to dispose of their cigarettes in the appropriate receptacles provided within each area. Disciplinary measures would be expected to be reserved for repeat infractions and infractions that interfere with the College’s academic or workplace needs or responsibilities.
The policy will be communicated to all members of the campus community. The College's Smoking Policy will be included in formal orientation for all incoming students and employees and posted on the College website.
Compliance with this policy is the shared responsibility of all Cape Cod Community College staff, students and faculty. The success of this policy will depend on the courtesy, respect and cooperation of all members of the campus community.
Students/faculty/staff completing a 6-week smoke-enders course will be reimbursed 50% of their costs. Please contact the Human Resources Office for more information.
All supervisors and department heads will communicate the Smoking Policy to everyone within their area of responsibility.
