Intro: Deaf History/Amer Deaf Cul

Introducatory survey of the history of Deaf people in western culture. American Sign Language, the culture it reflects, various professions and organizations within the Deaf community, legislation impacting Deaf people, and an overview of educational approaches/controversies will be addressed. Emphasis is on the sociological and cultural make-up of Deaf people and the American Deaf community and their relations to non-Deaf society. Members of the Deaf community are involved in class activities. Prerequisite: ENL020 and ENL050 or satisfactory basic skills assessment scores / 3 credits.

ASL101-001

American Sign Language I

An introductory-level course in American Sign Language intended to give an overview of both the language and the culture of the Deaf community. The course will focus on frequently used signs, basic rules of grammar, and cultural features within the Deaf community. Prerequisite: ENL010 or satisfactory reading comprehension score on the basic skills assessment / 3 credits. Offered: Fall, Spring, Summer

ASL102-001

American Sign Language II

This is a continuation of the language and cultural study of the Deaf. It includes further development of receptive and expressive signs, use of the signing space, classifiers, and facial and body expressions. Prerequisite: ASL101 / 3 credits. Offered: Fall, Spring

ASL201-001

American Sign Language III

Further development of expressive and receptive communicative skills used with the sign language of the Deaf. Additional emphasis on increasing fluency in the language and in providing an opportunity for proficiency in use through extensive work in vocabulary acquisition, translations of Deaf and English idioms and study of the American Sign Language used by the Deaf. Prerequisite: ASL102 and ASL100 / 3 credits. Offered: Varies

ASL204-001

Fingerspelling & ASL Number Systems

This course is designed to develop further competency in expressive and receptive fingerspelling and to study in depth the complex rules and patterns of numbers in ASL. Topics include phonic syllabication and strategies of fingerspelling, cardinal and ordinal systems, incorporate number systems, and unique number systems. Prerequisite: ASL102 / 2 credits.
